Horizontal drilling rigs

Each urbanized area is extremely inaccessible when it comes to the possibility of works related to the laying or renovation of pipelines, sewage network or cabling. Carrying out these projects in an urban space covered with busy roads, railways or trams, and also used by residents, is quite a challenge. Removing asphalt and other infrastructure elements, and then restoring the area to its former appearance is costly and time-consuming, and at the same time troublesome for city dwellers. The horizontal drilling rig is a device that allows for this type of work to be carried out in a collision-free and as minimally invasive manner.

What are drilling rigs?

Drilling rigs are devices designed to make holes of a certain length and diameter in the ground of various degrees of hardness. Machines of this type have long been used in mining, but drilling rigs successfully support most of the underground construction work. A characteristic feature of drilling rigs is the equipment for advancing the drill, as well as securing the machine during its operation.

What is a horizontal drilling rig for?

One of the types of drilling rigs distinguished by the way they work and purpose is a horizontal drilling rig. It is this type of device that can be found on construction sites in built-up areas, where opencast works are not possible due to the existing infrastructure, most often transport.
A horizontal drilling rig is a device that allows you to drill boreholes of various diameters, thanks to which it is suitable, among others, in the construction of pipelines that are part of the gas, water, sewage or heating networks. In addition, with the help of a horizontal drilling rig, it collects cable entries for electrical and communication installations in a collision-free manner. The task of the device is not only to drill the necessary hole, but also to place pipes in the ground, which will become part of the installation. Each horizontal drilling rig has a bed – that is, an element of the structure on which the auger will move while performing its task. Heads responsible for the operation of horizontal drilling rigs can be designed for normal or rocky soils.

Types of horizontal drilling rigs

Horizontal drilling rigs differ in various parameters, including the type of substrate for which they are intended, the diameter of the borehole, power, additional equipment or the length of the bed. One of the basic divisions of drilling rigs is the division according to the method of powering the device. On this basis, we distinguish mainly electric and hydraulic drilling rigs. How are these types of devices different?
The electric motor is of course responsible for the operation of the first type of drilling rigs. Power can be supplied by a generator. In turn, the horizontal hydraulic head is a device powered by a hydraulic power unit driven by an internal combustion engine. Some head models can also be adapted from hydraulic excavators.

Additional equipment for horizontal drilling rigs

Depending on the conditions in which the horizontal drilling rig works, its additional equipment may be useful. For example, an additional set of auxiliary motors whose task is to control the feed of the drill bits. A customer who orders a drilling rig from the manufacturer or distributor can also count on the purchase of drills or directional pipes intended for it. Often it is also possible to custom-made a drill bed, structurally adapted to the dimensions of the drill bits.
